StartinThe Emmanuel Walderdorff Galerie is mounting a first solo show of work by the Slovakian artist Patrik Kovačovský, called "Fluid Picture"’. Kovačovský addresses the current media-driven situation of the picture with a complex structural strategy that both shifts pictorial material into a sculptural state and also places sculpture in a filmic context. Art genres such as installation, object, painting or film are all present in his work, but mingled with each other and difficult to differentiate. This sophisticated system of apparently disparate formalities brings Kovačovský to a very personal and precise language in which the random is rated equally with the monumental, and always has something to say about the relationship of the self to space and time.

The large object called Flight (2006) is one of a series of Kovačovský’s works in which the motif of flying recurs, sometimes in the sense of longing to fly, sometimes in a sense relating structurally to aviation. Two differently sizes spheres in utopian white, linked or growing together by a wormhole, suggest a balloon-like flying object. This hermetic double balloon is anchored to the floor, which underlines the lightness of the object and also implies to us its ability to fly. The situation is enlivened from within the structure by the projection of a flag-waving human silhouette: an anonymous person permanently sending out signals, enclosed within the spherical membrane of a strange airship.

As is generally the case, embedding (and here ‘embedding’ should definitely be taken in the mineralogical sense) has an important part to play. This shows particularly well in a series of works in which precious stones or gilded material, but also valuable everyday objects (such as a laptop or a camera) are cast inside artificial resin. But something that looks so close that it could be picked up has been made unusable once and for all, removed to an unreachable distance: a simple but effective measure to revalue commercial fetishes and at the same time an overdue complement to Marcel Duchamp’s idea of the ready-made. The objet trouvé, whether it is worthless or valuable, comes close to the natural-historical specimen and functions as an anchor-point in a past that is already historical. But the artificial resin gives the effect of history that has crystallized and taken on substance. Here the spatial situation is transformed into a temporal one, and vice versa in a way that is akin to alchemy – and this applies to all Kovačovský’s work: the temporal is shifted into a concrete sculptural dimension.

Kovačovský accords his works a natural autonomy, but constantly arranges them, apparently playfully, as ensembles and installations in which they relate to each other and form various narratives and treatises. But it is not just the contextualization of the works among themselves that is significant, but also that of the artistic genres, which not only mingle but fit in as completely as possible with the sculptural idea: so something that appears as painting, drawing or film intends to be understood above all by the premises of space. But as the classical two-dimensional genres figure numerously within this idea, it is not surprising that this still goes hand in hand with a definitely pictorial concept. And it is equally unsurprising that this pictorial concept does not think in classical categories such as illusion or composition. Sometimes there are magnetic pictorial elements that can be placed randomly, sometimes the picture is painted, sometimes it is a reworking of historical picture sources such as film advertising, magazines, banknotes or maps. In Kovačovský’s case the picture is neither a proven nor a reliable authority. It is more likely to interest him as a bearer of memory and myth, or as an intellectual and spiritual projection, as sealed time.
